What is an RA?
Resident Assistant (RA) is an academic-year student employee within Housing and Residence Life (HRL) that helps create and support a community of students within the residence halls at George Mason University. RAs dedicate their time and energy to the residential community by ensuring that students have a healthy, safe, and supportive environment in which to learn and develop. RAs are expected to be visible in their communities and serve as an available resource to residents. Resident Assistants will engage with residential students through peer-to-peer communication and support, implementation of residential curriculum initiatives, staffing community desks, performing community checks, and other departmental, divisional, and university initiatives. All RAs are supervised by a Community Director and/or Graduate Community Director.
What is an RLC RA?
A Residential Learning Community Resident Assistants (RLC RA) is an academic-year student employee within the Housing and Residence Life (HRL). RLC RAs serve a special population of students who live in an RLC and collaborate with the RLC partner on developing of the RLC. RLC RAs dedicate their time and energy to the residents of their community, ensuring that students have a healthy, safe, and supportive environment in which to learn and develop. Housing Tour Ambassador
A Housing Tour Ambassador (HTA) is a student representative responsible for leading tours of George Mason University’s on-campus housing for prospective students, families, and other visitors. HTAs are the face of the Housing and Residence Life (HRL) department for incoming students, and they play a crucial role in showcasing the benefits of living on campus. They are well-versed in the university’s housing options, policies, amenities, and the overall GMU experience. Through their tours, HTAs help prospective students picture themselves as part of the campus community, making them an essential part of GMU’s outreach efforts.
Office Assistant
An Office Assistant (OA) in Housing and Residence Life (HRL) is a student employee who staffs our two 24/7 Housing Desks. During business hours, they assist students, families, and guests with questions in person and over the phone. In addition to providing excellent customer service, OAs manage various administrative tasks, maintain accurate logs, and assist students with lockouts and other residence hall issues. After hours, OAs connect students with emergency resources and on-call staff as needed. With the HRL Housing Desks operating 24/7, OAs can work during weekends and overnight shifts. Their professionalism and commitment make them a crucial part of the HRL team.

Become a key part of the campus community as an Office Assistant (OA) for the 2025–2026 academic year. This part-time, on-campus position in Fairfax, VA offers you the chance to build your skills in communication, problem-solving, and customer service—all while earning $17/hour.
As an OA, you’ll be the first point of contact for students, families, and guests, manage residence hall support tasks, and contribute to a welcoming, safe environment at Mason.
