                          Housing Application FAQ's

This FAQ page list should cover most questions students might have about the campus housing application process while emphasizing fees, room assignments, roommate preferences, and gender-inclusive housing. For more info, please email housing@gmu.edu

How the Housing Application Process Works

Your housing portal is the system operated by StarRez, where we use for all your records and applications related to housing. On StarRez you will be able to fill out your Housing Applications, winter break stay request, reserve a move-in time, roommate grouping, room change, and pay your deposit, along with a whole host of other applications that you might need during your stay at Mason Housing.

Log In To Your Housing Application Portal

You will log into StarRez using your NetID and password like you do with your student email. You will need to use the two-factor authentication through the duo app.

How It Works

The Housing Application portal has two menus, one across the top and one that you can access by clicking on the three horizontal lines in the top left corner. The menu across the top of your home screen will have the most important links, such as housing application and room change/swap. The menu you can access by clicking the three horizontal lines will have more specific links such as where to reserve a move-in time.

Housing Selections

Housing selection allows students to choose their accommodations based on availability and preferences (such as room type (e.g., single, double) and building preferences, after completing their housing application. This process typically includes assigned selection times and confirmation of housing assignments. We usually assign rooms on a first-come, first-served basis.

Roommate Grouping

You can request a specific roommate when filling out your housing application, provided that both students mutually request each other. Most portals will have a section where you enter your roommate’s information.

Gender Inclusive Housing

Gender-inclusive housing allows students of any gender identity to live together in a shared space. This option is designed to create a comfortable and welcoming environment for all students, particularly those who identify as LGBTQ+. Please make sure to fill in your preferred option in the housing application portal.

Room Assignments

How are room assignments determined?

What should I do if I don’t like my room assignment?

You can typically request a room change after the first few weeks of the semester, though it depends on the availability of other rooms. So, we offer a waitlist, based on available rooms.  Please check the resources page in the housing application portal on how to request a room swap if required. Academic Year Room Change Guide
