Move-In Magic: Tips to Start Your Semester Strong

Moving into college is an exciting time filled with new beginnings, fresh opportunities, and yes…plenty of boxes. Whether you're a first-year student or a seasoned upperclassman, we’ve got you covered with this step-by-step guide packed with timelines, packing tips, and key dates to help you settle in stress-free.

Key Move-In Dates

Early Arrival (By Application Only)
Sunday, August 17, 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Eligibility: Upperclassmen & new students attending orientation (Aug 21)
Fee: $60/night (waived if attending orientation or MoveCrew volunteer)
Application Deadline: August 1 (via Housing Portal)

New Student Move-In
August 20–21, 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Check-In: Angel Cabrera Global Center (ACGC)

Upper-Level Student Move-In (Self Check-In)
August 22–24, 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Go directly to your unloading zone (email with instructions in July)

Parking & Unloading Zones

New Students (Aug 20–21): Check in at ACGC before unloading.

Upper-Level Students (Aug 22–24): Proceed directly to the unloading zone.

Unloading Locations:

  1. Shenandoah Area (Liberty Square, Potomac Heights, etc.): Lot R or Presidents Park
  2. Whitetop & Rogers: Lot I
  3. Other Halls (e.g., Eastern Shore, Piedmont): Rappahannock Deck
  4. Townhouses: Unload directly in front of your unit

Tip: After unloading, please move vehicles (except Townhouses) to Lot K.

What to Pack (and What Not To)

Must-Haves:

  • Bedding (Twin XL)
  • Shower caddy
  • Laundry supplies
  • Power strip
  • Desk lamp
  • Mason ID, Parking Permit, Unloading Pass

Leave at Home:

  • Candles
  • Air fryers/toasters
  • Extension cords without surge protection

Tip: Coordinate with your roommate on shared items, such as refrigerators and décor.

Move-In Checklist

  1. Confirm your move-in time (check email)
  2. Log into Mason Email – your NetID is essential
  3. Review room measurements
  4. Label all belongings
  5. Know your unloading zone
  6. Print or save your Move-In Guide
  7. Get your Mason ID & Parking Permit early
  8. Reserve a MicroFridge
  9. Contact your roommate in advance

Bonus Tips for a Stress-Free Move

  • Arrive early in your assigned window. 

  • Bring water and snacks—it’s a workout! 

  • Use the green bins provided at welcome stations to make moving easier. 

  • Dress comfortably, and don’t forget sunscreen.
